Category Manager – Market Data

Overview

The Market Data Global Category Manager is responsible for developing and executing category strategies across all market data services, including all types of data (Pricing, reference, real time) analytics, trading platforms, terminals, and exchange/venue spend. This role blends commercial leadership, supplier expertise, and deep market intelligence to drive value for clients while ensuring consistent, high‑quality delivery across sourcing and category initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

BCV Coordination (Business Case Validation)

  • Lead end‑to‑end BCV development for all assigned market data categories, ensuring robust financial modelling, demand validation, and risk assessment.

  • Ensure BCVs reflect accurate licensing structures, user profiles and vendor commercial models.

  • Deliver high‑quality BCV reports aligned to project timelines, highlighting clear savings levers such as consolidation, rationalisation, contract restructuring, and usage optimisation.

AVC Participation (Accerlerated Value Creation)

  • Contribute to AVC planning by identifying category‑specific value opportunities across clients.

  • Ensure a consistent approach to AVC reporting, including savings methodology, baselining, and validation.

  • Lead the AVC workstream for assigned categories, ensuring outcomes are commercially sound and aligned with client expectations.

  • Partner with sourcers to ensure AVC initiatives are executed with discipline and documented accurately.

Category Strategy Development & Execution

  • Develop comprehensive Market Data Category Strategies for existing and new clients, covering:

    • Vendor landscape and segmentation

    • Spend analysis and category taxonomy

    • Demand drivers and consumption patterns

    • Regulatory and exchange‑driven cost impacts

    • Contracting models (enterprise licences, global agreements, usage‑based models)

  • Maintain a pipeline of category initiatives with at least three active projects per quarter across assigned clients.

  • Oversee execution quality across all sourcing activities, including:

    • RFX events tailored to market data (where appropriate)

    • Supplier evaluations and scorecards

    • Commercial and contractual negotiations

    • Benchmarking and renewal strategy development

  • Ensure consistent application of best practices across all market data sourcing and category work.

Knowledge Management

  • Benchmark commercial insights from historic BCVs, including pricing, discounting patterns, exchange fee structures, and vendor negotiation behaviours.

  • Ensure sanitized benchmarking data is accessible to sourcers via approved tools.

  • Publish at least one category update per month, covering vendor changes, pricing trends, regulatory shifts, or product developments.
  • Mentor strategic and tactical sourcers to deepen their understanding of market data licensing, vendor models, and negotiation levers.

  • Promote adoption of digital tools for category management, including analytics platforms, benchmarking tools, and contract intelligence systems.

Market Intelligence

  • Maintain up‑to‑date supplier profiles and category insights across the key Market Data suppliers.

  • Ensure sourcers actively use intelligence platforms to support sourcing and renewal planning.

  • Identify new savings opportunities through:

    • Market shifts (e.g., vendor consolidation, new entrants)

    • Demand management and rationalisation opportunities

    • Alternative data sources or competitive vendor offerings

  • Maintain and refine preferred supplier lists, consolidating fragmented spend where appropriate.

  • Lead monthly market intelligence sessions covering:

    • Product launches or deprecations

    • Industry trends affecting cost structures

    • Competitive dynamics across major market data providers

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in Market Data procurement, category management, or vendor management.

  • Strong understanding of market data licensing, commercial models, and vendor ecosystems.

  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage complex stakeholder environments.

  • Strong analytical skills with experience in financial modelling and benchmarking.

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.

  • Experience with digital sourcing tools and market intelligence platforms.
